Robberies, vandalism plague new E. Java bridge

Padang Ekspres-Ten days after being it was inaugurated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the Suramadu bridge has seen the robbing of a legislator and been scarred by unfettered vandalism.

On Wednesday night, two unidentified men robbed Bali legislative councilor I Made Adi Wirawan while he was crossing the bridge along with his family, making off with the councilman's mobile phone and Rp 3 million (US$300) in cash.

"The robbers used sharp weapons to hold up the victim, who had stopped along the bridge to take photographs," Sukolilo Police chief Adj. Comr. Sutaji said Friday.

He added Wirawan and his family, who were on vacation and taking in the scenery around the bridge, had left Labang village in Bangkalan Madura when the robbers approached them.
