Ex-top cop takes helm of state railway company

padang ekspres.net-Three months after leaving his post of National Police chief, Gen. (ret) Bambang Hendarso Danuri, was sworn in on Thursday as president commissioner of state railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI).

Bambang is expected to revamp the company's ageing safety standards, which have been blamed for a series of fatal train accidents across the country.

“With 'Pak Bambang’s long career at the National Police, I think it is the right decision to put him in this position,” State Minister for State Enterprises Mustafa Abubakar told reporters after an inauguration ceremony of newly-appointed KAI directors and commissioners.

Mustafa said he hoped Bambang would support the company’s long-running fight against public vandalism and attacks on its cars and railway lines.

The ministry also inaugurated Aswhin Sasongko and Herry Bakti Gumay as KAI commissioners, Kurniadi Atmosasmito as finance director and Rono Pradipto as the company’s safety and risk management director.

Bambang, however, did not attend his inauguration because he is out of town.

“But he has already confirmed his approval [for the appointment],” Mustafa said.[tjp]
